Mastering the new Amazon 75 character title limit
Amazon is slashing product title lengths to improve mobile shopping and prepare for AI search. You must update your listings before the deadline to protect your keyword ranking and prevent automated rewrites.
The short version
Starting July 27, 2026, Amazon product titles in all non media categories must be 75 characters or fewer including spaces. To compensate, Amazon introduced Item Highlights which gives you 125 extra characters for searchable details. If you fail to update your listings, Amazon will use AI to rewrite your titles for you. Take control now to maintain your search ranking.
Why shorter titles are taking over
Many sellers are panicking about the reduction from 200 characters to just 75. However, this update is a necessary correction for modern shopping habits. With over 60% of Amazon traffic coming from mobile devices, long titles are already being truncated at around 70 to 80 characters. A strict 75 character limit ensures your entire title is visible on small screens.
Furthermore, the product title remains the most critical factor for SEO, holding roughly 50% of the keyword ranking weight. This change forces discipline. You can no longer stuff titles with redundant words. You must lead with your absolute strongest primary keyword to secure your ranking.
How to turn this into an advantage
Lead with primary keywords
With limited space, your primary keyword must come first. For example, instead of a bloated title, a listing like an Aromanso Japanese Cast Iron Teapot should immediately state the brand and core product before listing the capacity or colour.
Utilise Item Highlights
The new Item Highlights field is fully searchable and appears directly below the title. Use these 125 characters for materials, use cases, or secondary keywords. Your total indexable space has not actually shrunk.
Beat the AI rewrite
If you leave your titles over the 75 character limit after July 27, Amazon AI will gradually replace them. Updating manually ensures you retain complete control over your brand messaging and SEO strategy.
Update backend search terms
Any valuable keywords that no longer fit in the title or the highlights should be moved to your backend search terms. This preserves your indexing for mid tail queries without cluttering the customer facing page.
Three steps to compliance
1. Audit your current catalogue
Identify all active ASINs with titles exceeding 75 characters. Pay special attention to your top performing products as these carry the highest risk if their SEO weight shifts unexpectedly.
2. Rewrite and separate
Draft new concise titles focusing strictly on the brand, primary keyword, and one key differentiator. Move all secondary features, materials, and benefits into the new 125 character Item Highlights section.
3. Monitor the performance
After pushing the updates, keep a close eye on your keyword rankings and conversion rates. Adjust your Item Highlights or backend terms if you notice any drop in organic traffic.
